Zacchaeus was not the most popular guy. In fact, he was pretty much hated. He was, after all, a Jewish man who collected taxes for Rome. He was seen as a traitor and admitted to being a thief. He was not the kind of person anyone would expect Jesus to notice. But Jesus did. Not only did Jesus notice him, he invited himself over for dinner at Zacchaeus’ house. Zacchaeus was so overwhelmed by Jesus’ kindness, that he repented of his sin and promised to pay back – with interest – everything he’d stolen.Jesus didn’t look down on Zacchaeus. Jesus didn’t consider him a hopeless case or a lost cause. It can be easy to look down on others – especially when they sin differently than we do. But let’s remember the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus and extend love and grace to all.
